Shrinking Compensating Concrete: Type (E1) K for a Variety of Uses – Conforms to ASTM C 845

Use Type-K shrinkage compensating concrete technology in all types of structures to counteract drying-shrinkage cracking.  In shrinkage-compensating concrete, theconcrete expands slightly during the first week after it is cast, and when restrained (internally or externally), it places the concrete mass into compression. The mass returns to its original size, when the effects of drying shrinkage occur. The result is a concrete that can minimize drying shrinkage cracks and offer advantages in design and construction over portland cement. By designing & producing controlled compressive stresses in the concrete, shrinkage compensating concrete reduces the detrimental tensile forces which lead to shrinkage cracking. If the expansion is sufficient to keep the concrete in compression, no cracking can occur. As long as the drying-shrinkage tensile stress in the concrete are lower than the tensile strength of the concrete, the concrete will not crack.  On Slab On Grade (SOG) applications, shrinkage compensating concrete eliminates curling, per ACI 223.

Type-K Cement

When controlling shrinkage is critical for your project, replacing regular portland cement with Type-K cement is your solution. A hydraulic cement designed for use in shrinkage-compensating concrete, Type-K provides an effective and economical way to minimize the cracking caused by drying shrinkage in portland cement concrete. Contractors use Type-K in any application where regular portland cement concrete is used, including bridge decks, parking structures, reinforced slabs, slabs on grade, containment vessels, post-tensioned structural concrete, toppings, waste water treatment plants, hazardous waste containment, swimming pools, non-shrink grout, soil and rock anchoring, roof decks, precast concrete and cast-in-place concrete.

Komponent®

In 1991, CTS began producing Komponent®, an expansive cement mineral additive. When Komponent®, is mixed with portland cement, the new mixture is ASTM C 845 cement.  Type-K concrete made with Komponent minimizes shrinkage cracking in concrete while reducing the number of joints necessary.  For your projects specifying Type-K concrete using Komponent®, Komponent®, often delivers a more cost-efficient option whenever Type-K cement is specified. Use Komponent for constructing bridge decks, parking structures, slabs on grade and containment tanks. When incorporated into a concrete mix design, Komponent®, can reduce or eliminate shrinkage cracking in concrete and reduce the number of joints in the concrete.

A good example of the advantages of Komponent®,, is in St. Louis. The Page Avenue Bridge over the River Des Peres, which was worn and deteriorated after years of use. Around 60 years old, the bridge needed a new deck and replacement of the substructure above the walls. Since the bridge was still in use, it was necessary to make the repairs quickly, so the traffic flow was minimally disrupted. The bridge deck required 4,000 psi before it could open to traffic. To quickly achieve such a high psi, some of the portland cement was used with CTS Cement’s Komponent®,.  On this project, MODOT had a minimum 7-day wet cure and a 14-day cure time, with incentives for early completion. A faster cure time was desired, so a new mix was designed using Komponent®, and presented samples to MODOT. The samples produced a 3-day wet cure and a 4-day total cure.
