A Type III (product-specific) environmental product declaration (EPD) is available for our two flagship brands: Rapid Set® Cement and Komponent® shrinkage-compensating cement additive. View our press release.

An EPD is based on a globally approved and recognized protocol (International Organization for Standardization 14025:2006) for quantifying a product's impact on the environment. As such, it enables project owners, engineers, and designers to understand the environmental ramifications of specifying that product. To qualify as a Type III (product-specific) EPD, an independent third party calculates the product’s cradle-to-gate global warming potential (GWP): the amount of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2-eq) generated by extracting raw materials (referred to as the A1 stage), shipping them to a manufacturing plant (A2 stage), and turning them into cement (A3 stage).

Compared to the Portland Cement Association’s industry-standard EPD for portland cement, Rapid Set® generates 27% less CO2-eq per metric ton.

Rapid Set® is the brand name for our calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement, an ASTM C1600-compliant alternative to portland cement that is made with 20% less limestone than portland cement, lowering CO2 emissions from calcination, and processed at lower kiln temperatures, lowering emissions from fuel consumption. Rapid Set® can achieve 4500 psi compressive strength in less than two hours and, unlike other CSAs, doesn’t require blending with portland cement or accelerating additives and admixtures.

An EPD covers stages A1 through A3 of the product’s lifecycle, but there are additional carbon savings to be gained by specifying Rapid Set Cement. Click here to find out what they are.

Komponent® is an ASTM C845-compliant shrinkage-compensating cement additive that is blended with portland cement or portland-limestone cement (PLC) to create Type K shrinkage-compensating concrete and grout. Made with our calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) technology, its global warming potential (GWP) is almost 56% lower than portland cement's.

* CO2 emissions saved is based on total Rapid Set Cement production since 1990. The rate at which the counter increases is based on how many pounds of Rapid Set Cement are produced per second in 2023 as calculated by the total tonnage of Rapid Set Cement produced in 2023.
