At CTS Cement, we go way beyond just supplying high-performance materials. Our team is hands-on, collaborative, and committed to ensuring every customer not only gets the right product but knows exactly how to use it every step of the way.
Case in Point: Universal Studios Epic Universe
When Universal Studios set out to build its new Epic Universe Park in Orlando, it wasn’t just about expanding an amusement destination, it was about creating a world-class experience from the ground up. That experience didn’t stop at roller coasters and themed attractions. It extended to every detail, including the floors.
To achieve the design vision for several high-traffic retail and restaurant spaces within the park, Universal turned to David Allen Company, a nationally recognized leader in terrazzo and specialty flooring. In turn, David Allen looked to CTS for product innovation and technical guidance.
Together, we brought to life one of the most challenging and rewarding polished concrete overlay installations in recent memory—thanks to shared values, hands-on collaboration, and a relentless focus on service.
A Complex Vision, a Fast Track Schedule
Epic Universe is the largest amusement park ever built in the U.S., and the second largest in the world. Designed to wow millions of visitors, its aesthetics had to be exceptional, right down to the flooring.
David Allen Company was awarded multiple installations across the park, including retail and restaurant areas requiring decorative, polished concrete with custom aggregates, color blends, striping, emblems, and curved design elements. The goal was to achieve a terrazzo-like appearance with modern overlay technology while staying on an aggressive build schedule.
Originally delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project’s timeline compressed significantly, placing a lot of pressure on all trades. Fast return to service, material availability, and installation efficiency were non-negotiable.
A Partner Every Step of the Way
From day one, CTS worked closely with David Allen’s (specialty) concrete division. Our collaboration started during the preconstruction phase, with our team joining design meetings alongside Universal Creative, the park’s in-house design group.
“We weren’t just talking about product. We were planning how to make the design work in the field,” said Jose Ruiz, CTS National Sales Manager. “From the tint and broadcast technique to mockups and finishing, we were involved in every detail.”
CTS provided extensive support in:
Reviewing and refining design mockups
Offering guidance on product choice and mix design
Addressing performance concerns like turnaround time and application efficiency
Troubleshooting site conditions before installation
Training subcontractors on best practices
Real-Time Problem Solving
During one of the early installations at a signature restaurant, our team identified a potential substrate issue that could have led to delamination. Working with David Allen and the general contractor, we recommended adjustments that helped prevent failure before it happened.
Another challenge came with the intricate design work. Custom broadcast techniques were needed to transition between light and heavy aggregate zones in curved or detailed areas. CTS experts guided installers through these challenges on site, adapting in real time and sharing best practices built from years of hands-on experience.
“David Allen didn’t just want a vendor—they wanted a partner who could help them succeed,” said Israel Capo, CTS Southeast Regional Manager. “We were treated like an extension of their team.”
Why TRU® Made the Difference
To meet the project’s demands, Rapid Set® TRU® Self-Leveling was selected for its fast-setting performance, high polishability, and reliable consistency.
Compared to traditional terrazzo systems, TRU delivered:
Faster turnaround: Install and polish in days, not weeks
Reduced labor and cost: Less downtime, fewer trades
Superior flexibility: Easy to work with in complex areas
Aesthetic impact: Custom blends matched Universal’s design intent
This enabled David Allen to meet strict project milestones, even when working alongside dozens of other trades and shifting park construction priorities.
Results That Speak for Themselves
The finished floors rivaled terrazzo in quality and finish, with seamless integration of Universal’s brand vision. From sweeping curves to high-gloss finishes and intricate striping, the overlays delivered both performance and beauty, standing up to high foot traffic and theme park demands.
“If you didn’t know better, you’d think it was traditional terrazzo,” said Ruiz. “But it was completed in a fraction of the time.”
